Last week we said hello to our new vertical turning centre, the Doosan VT900. This powerful machine has a 40kW spindle and increases our turning diameter capacity to Ø900mm.

This machine has a fairly extensive commissioning process including diamond drilling in the floor so it can be bolted down for rigidity. To create the space and access for the VT900 we had to temporarily move one of our three small VMC’s and also bid farewell to two of our older machines – a few tears were shed! These were necessary decisions as we look to improve our service and capacity with the most up to date equipment.

Moving machines out the way wasn’t the only thing: this beast of a machine needed a section of our overhead crane removing just so it could get in! The shuffling of machinery, crane work and installation took place over 4 days which was seriously impressive. A lot of hard work and organisation was put in by our guys in cooperation with the team at Mills CNC.

Three lucky lads had some training today and they were making swarf by lunchtime!
